Article 380 (1 of 1)
Multioutlet Assembly — Full Article Breakdown!
SLIDE 1 — Scope, Listing & Reconditioned Equipment (380.1, 380.2, 380.3)
🏗️ WHAT IS A MULTIOUTLET ASSEMBLY?
A metal or nonmetallic raceway, usually surface-mounted, designed to hold branch-circuit conductors AND receptacles. It can be factory-assembled or field-assembled, with receptacles spaced wherever you need them.
📌 For load calcs, see 220.14(H).
✅ Must be LISTED — both the assembly and its associated fittings (380.2).
🚫 Reconditioned multioutlet assemblies AND reconditioned fittings are NOT permitted to be installed (380.3(B)).
SLIDE 2 — Uses Permitted & Not Permitted (380.10, 380.12)
✅ WHERE YOU CAN USE THEM
Dry locations — that's it.
⛔ WHERE YOU CAN'T USE THEM
1️⃣ Concealed — EXCEPT a metal assembly can have building finish around its back/sides, or a nonmetallic assembly can be recessed in a baseboard
2️⃣ Subject to severe physical damage
3️⃣ 300V or more between conductors — UNLESS the assembly is metal,> 1.02 mm (0.040 in.) thick
4️⃣ Subject to corrosive vapors
5️⃣ Hoistways
6️⃣ Hazardous (classified) locations — unless another article permits it
7️⃣ Cord-and-plug connected
SLIDE 3 — Insulated Conductors: Deflection & Pull Boxes (380.23)
📐 DEFLECTED CONDUCTORS (380.23(A))
Where conductors are deflected (at ends, where raceways/cables enter/leave, or the assembly direction changes more than 30°) → one-wire-per-terminal dimensions from Table 312.9(A) apply.
🎣 USED AS A PULL BOX (380.23(B))
For insulated conductors 4 AWG or larger pulled through: distance between entries enclosing the same conductor must meet 314.28(A)(1) for straight pulls / (A)(2) for angle pulls — use the minimum trade size raceway equivalent when transposing cable size.
💡 In practice: straight pulls need 8x the raceway trade size; angle pulls need 6x.
SLIDE 4 — Through Dry Partitions & Final Exam (380.76)
🚧 METAL ASSEMBLY THROUGH DRY PARTITIONS (380.76)
Permitted to extend THROUGH (not run within) dry partitions if you can still remove the cap/cover on every exposed portion — and NO outlet is located inside the partition itself.
🎉 That's a wrap on Article 380 — Multioutlet Assembly!
🧠 FINAL EXAM QUESTION FOR ARTICLE 380

B) 0.040 in. (1.02mm)
C) 0.060 in. (1.52mm)
