⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Agricultural Buildings (Part 1 - Article 547) ⚡
Livestock barns, poultry confinement systems, and corrosive milking parlors—welcome to Article 547! How does the National Electrical Code regulate electrical installations in harsh farm environments? Let's break down the scope! 👇
What Article 547 Covers:
The Agricultural Scope: Applies to agricultural buildings or parts of buildings featuring excessive dust (feed, litter, and mineral particles in poultry, livestock, and fish confinement systems) or corrosive atmospheres.
Corrosive Atmospheres: Includes areas where animal excrement creates corrosive vapors, corrosive particles combine with moisture, or spaces are damp and wet due to periodic washing and sanitizing.
Tough Wiring for Tough Spaces:
Permitted Wiring Methods: Limited to Type UF, Type NMC, copper Type SE cable, jacketed Type MC cable, or raceways identified for dust/corrosive locations (plus Article 502 Part II methods).
Support & Mounting: Cables must be secured within 200 mm (8 in.) of each cabinet, box, or fitting. Nonmetallic boxes, fittings, conduit, and cables can be mounted directly to interior building surfaces without maintaining the standard 6 mm (1/4 in.) airspace.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Eliminating the 1/4-inch airspace and tightening cable support to 8 inches allows installers to run bead sealants around mounting surfaces, making washdown cleaning much easier and reducing physical damage!
