SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Disconnects & Circuit Sizing (Part 3 - Article 705) ⚡
Backfed breakers, rapid shutdown, and conductor ampacity rules—how do we safely isolate and protect distributed generation circuits? Let's check out Part I rules in Article 705! 👇
SLIDE 2 (SOURCE DISCONNECTING MEANS) Disconnect Requirements:
Readily Accessible: Disconnects must be simultaneously operable, trip all ungrounded conductors, and be clearly marked open/closed.
Backfeed Hazard Warning: If line and load terminals can be energized in the open position, the disconnect must carry a warning label stating terminals on both sides may remain live.
SLIDE 3 (CIRCUIT SIZING & THE 125% RULE) Conductor and OCPD Sizing:
The 125% Multiplier: Power source output circuit conductors and overcurrent protective devices (OCPDs) must be sized to carry not less than 125% of the maximum continuous power source output current.
Backfeed Suitability: Circuit breakers used for backfeed must not be marked "line" and "load" unless explicitly evaluated and approved for backfeeding.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
Under Section 705.30(E), plug-in type circuit breakers connected to an interactive power source do not require an additional mechanical fastener (screw-down kit) as long as the source operates purely in interactive mode or has island-mode open-phase protection!
