⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Cannabis Extraction Area Classifications (Part 2) ⚡
How far do Class I, Division 1 and Division 2 boundaries extend around an extraction booth or system? Let's check Section 512.5! 👇
Defining Division/Zone Boundaries:
Class I, Division 1 (or Zone 1): The space within 915 mm (3 ft) in all directions from equipment/containers releasing flammable vapors, extending to the floor. Tanks and container interiors are also Class I, Division 1 / Zone 0.
Class I, Division 2 (or Zone 2): Extends 610 mm (2 ft) beyond the Division 1 area, plus an additional 1525 mm (5 ft) horizontally up to 460 mm (18 in.) above the floor.
Sumps & Pits: Pits or below-grade channels within 3.05 m (10 ft) horizontally of a vapor source are Class I, Division 1 / Zone 1.
Booth Ventilation & Exhaust Rules:
Exhaust Safety: Air exhausted from cannabis oil booths shall not be recirculated or exhausted into the room where the booth is installed.
Booth Classifications: Where flammable vapors are released, the space within the booth is Class I, Division 1 / Zone 1, and the space within 915 mm (3 ft) of any opening is Class I, Division 2 / Zone 2.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: If equipment is specifically marked to indicate that solvent release is maintained below 25% of the Lower Flammable Limit (LFL) without ventilation, the immediate 3-foot boundary drops from Division 1 down to a Class I, Division 2 location!
