What Is Nonmetallic Underground Conduit with Conductors (NUCC)
SLIDE 1 — What Is NUCC?
🔌 CONDUIT + CONDUCTORS, PRE-ASSEMBLED
NUCC is a unique product: nonmetallic conduit with the CONDUCTORS ALREADY INSTALLED by the manufacturer. Commonly used by electric utilities for outdoor lighting. Shipped in continuous lengths on coils, reels, or cartons — and designed so conductors CAN be removed/reinserted if needed.
📋 Listing (354.2): NUCC AND its fittings — both listed.
♻️ Reconditioned equipment (354.3): NUCC and fittings are NOT permitted to be reconditioned and installed.
SLIDE 2 — Uses Permitted & NOT Permitted
✅ USES PERMITTED (354.10)
✅ Direct burial underground
✅ Encased or embedded in concrete
✅ Cinder fill
✅ Severe corrosive influences (per 300.8) — where specifically approved for those chemicals
✅ ABOVE ground — ONLY when encased in at least 2 in. (50mm) of concrete
🚫 USES NOT PERMITTED (354.12)
❌ Exposed locations
❌ INSIDE buildings — Exception: the conductor/cable portion CAN extend into the building for termination purposes, per 300.5
❌ Hazardous (classified) locations (unless another article permits)
📌 Same general philosophy as HDPE — this is fundamentally an underground product, with a narrow exception for termination purposes only.
SLIDE 3 — Sizing & the Unique Bending Radius Table
📏 SIZE LIMITS (354.20)
Minimum: trade size ½. Maximum: trade size 4.
🔄 BENDS (354.24) — SPECIAL TABLE, NOT Chapter 9!
Unlike most conduit articles, NUCC does NOT follow Chapter 9 Table 2 for bend radius — it has its OWN dedicated table, 354.24(A):
🔹 ½ in. → 10 in. radius
🔹 ¾ in. → 12 in.
🔹 1 in. → 14 in.
🔹 1¼ in. → 18 in.
🔹 1½ in. → 20 in.
🔹 2 in. → 26 in.
🔹 2½ in. → 36 in.
🔹 3 in. → 48 in.
🔹 4 in. → 60 in.
Bends must be made MANUALLY. Max 360° total bends per run between pull points — same universal rule.
SLIDE 4 — Trimming, Construction & Marking + Exam Question
✂️ TRIMMING (354.28)
For termination: conduit trimmed AWAY from conductors/cables using an approved method that won't damage insulation/jacket. ALL conduit ends trimmed inside AND out.
🏗️ CONSTRUCTION (354.100)
Must be listed, moisture/corrosive-resistant, capable of being reeled without damage, sufficient strength for handling/installation abuse. Conductors/cables must be listed and comply with 310.10(C); different systems follow 300.5(C).
🔢 Conductor fill: per Chapter 9, Table 1 (same as most conduit articles).
🏷️ MARKING (354.120)
Marked every 10 ft (3.05m) per 110.21, INCLUDING conduit material type. PLUS: conductor/cable identification via a TAG at each end of the assembly or on the reel side — enclosed conductors marked per 310.8.
🎉 That wraps up Article 354 — NUCC!
