⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Class I Equipment - Motors & Switches (Part 3) ⚡
Can you install general-purpose motor starters in a Class I, Division 2 location? How do you handle motor surface temperatures? Let's check out Sections 501.100 through 501.125! 👇
Explosionproof vs. General Purpose:
Division 1 Enclosures: Switches, circuit breakers, motor controllers, and fuses must be provided with enclosures identified as a complete assembly for Class I, Division 1.
Division 2 Exceptions: General-purpose enclosures are permitted in Division 2 if current-interrupting contacts are oil-immersed, hermetically sealed, in nonincendive circuits, or listed for Division 2.
Managing Operating Temperatures:
Division 1 Motors: Rotating machinery in Division 1 must be explosionproof or purged/pressurized with clean air.
Division 2 Motors: Standard open or nonexplosionproof squirrel-cage induction motors without arcing switches or brushes are permitted in Division 2. External surface and space heater temperatures must not exceed 80 percent of the gas autoignition temperature.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Modern motors with high-temperature insulation systems (like Class H) can operate close to or above the ignition temperature of surrounding flammable vapors. Always verify your motor T-codes against the specific gases on site!
