SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Transfer Equipment & Signals (Part 2 - Article 702) ⚡
When you hook up an optional standby generator, preventing backfeed to the utility is non-negotiable. Let's check out the rules for transfer switches, meter-mounted units, and system signals in Article 702! 👇
SLIDE 2 (INTERCONNECTION & METER-MOUNTED SWITCHES) Transfer Equipment Requirements:
Preventing Backfeed: All standby systems require listed transfer equipment, interlocking devices, or transfer switches designed to prevent inadvertent interconnection of power sources.
Meter-Mounted Switches: Permitted if specifically listed as meter-mounted transfer switch equipment (UL 1008M) and approved by the serving utility.
SLIDE 3 (FIELD MARKINGS & SIGNALS) Documentation & Alarms:
SCCR Field Marking: In non-dwelling installations, the short-circuit current rating (SCCR) of the transfer equipment must be field-marked on the exterior based on the protective device settings.
Status Signals: Audible and visual signals should be provided where practicable to indicate source malfunction or when the standby source is carrying load.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
The exception under 702.5(A) allows temporary connection of a portable generator without a transfer switch, but only under strict supervision by qualified persons while the normal supply is physically locked out and isolated. Safety first!
