⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Cord Ampacities & Derating (Part 2) ⚡
Column A vs. Column B ratings, ambient temperature corrections, and conductor adjustment factors—let's check Section 400.5! 👇
SLIDE 2 (AMPACITY TABLES & CURRENT-CARRYING CONDUCTORS)
Selecting the Right Ampacity:
Table Columns: Table 400.5(A)(1) and Table 400.5(A)(2) provide ampacities based on conductor size and the number of current-carrying conductors.
Two vs. Three Conductors: Column A applies to three-conductor cords (and multiconductor cords with three current-carrying conductors). Column B applies when only two conductors are current-carrying.
Neutral Rules: A neutral conductor carrying only unbalanced load from other conductors of the same circuit is not counted as a current-carrying conductor.
SLIDE 3 (TEMPERATURE CORRECTIONS & MULTI-CONDUCTOR ADJUSTMENTS)
Derating for Heat and Bundle Size:
Ambient Temperature: When used in ambient temperatures above 30°C (86°F), temperature correction factors from Table 310.15(B)(1)(1) corresponding to the cable's rating must be applied (105°C cords use 90°C column factors).
Conductor Adjustments: When the number of current-carrying conductors exceeds three, the ampacity of each conductor must be reduced using Table 400.5(A)(3) percentages (e.g., 4 to 6 conductors at 80%, 7 to 9 at 70%).
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
Bundling multiple energized cords together or running them through high-ambient areas requires strict ampacity derating to prevent insulation breakdown and overheating!
