Auxiliary Gutters — Scope & Uses
SLIDE 1 — What Is an Auxiliary Gutter?
🔌 SUPPLEMENTAL WIRING SPACE — NOT A RACEWAY
Auxiliary gutters provide ADDITIONAL wiring space for enclosures/equipment — same construction as a wireway, but different APPLICATION. Key distinction: gutters are NOT raceways under Article 100's definition, so raceway-only rules (like 230.7's service-conductor separation) don't apply.
📌 Big benefit: auxiliary gutters CAN mix service, feeder, AND branch-circuit conductors in the same space — AND can contain bare/insulated copper/aluminum busbars, unlike wireways.
📋 Listing (366.2): nonmetallic gutters outdoors need listing for sunlight exposure, wet locations, AND max ambient temp. Indoors: just max ambient temp.
♻️ Reconditioned equipment (366.3): gutters and fittings NOT permitted to be reconditioned and installed.
SLIDE 2 — Uses Permitted (366.10)
✅ SHEET METAL vs. NONMETALLIC
Sheet metal: permitted indoors AND outdoors; wet locations need suitable listing.
Nonmetallic: must be listed for max ambient temp, marked for conductor insulation temp rating. Outdoor use requires specific listing/marking; indoor use is simpler.
⚠️ Cold weather note: extreme cold can make nonmetallic gutters brittle.
📏 EXTENDED DISTANCE (366.10(C)): gutters can extend up to 30 ft (9m) beyond the equipment they supplement. Exception: elevator installs (per 620.35) can exceed 30 ft.
SLIDE 3 — Uses NOT Permitted & Conductor Fill
🚫 USES NOT PERMITTED (366.12)
Simple but critical: auxiliary gutters shall NOT be used to enclose switches, OCPDs, appliances, or similar equipment. They're WIRING space, not equipment housing.
🔢 CONDUCTOR FILL (366.22)
Both sheet metal AND nonmetallic gutters: conductor cross-sectional area capped at 20% of interior cross-sectional area at any cross section.
SLIDE 4 — Parallel Conductors & Ampacity + Exam Question
⚡ PARALLEL CONDUCTOR GROUPING (366.20)
Single-conductor cables in parallel (per 310.10(G)) must be grouped with NO MORE than one conductor per phase/neutral/grounded conductor per group — prevents current imbalance from inductive reactance.
📊 AMPACITY (366.23)
Sheet metal: adjustment factors (310.15(C)(1)) apply ONLY when current-carrying conductors EXCEED 30 at any cross section. Bus bar ampacity capped at 1.55 A/mm² copper, 1.09 A/mm² aluminum.
Nonmetallic: adjustment factors apply up to the 20% fill limit — NO 30-conductor allowance like sheet metal gets.
