SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER)
⚡ NEC Quick Hit: High-Voltage Equipment (Part 1 - Article 495) ⚡
Voltage thresholds, mandatory listing effective dates, reconditioned switchgear rules, and wet-location enclosures—welcome to Article 495! Let's break down the fundamentals! 👇
SLIDE 2 (SCOPE & LISTING REQUIREMENTS)
What Article 495 Covers & Mandates:
System Scope: Covers general requirements for equipment operating at more than 1000 volts ac or 1500 volts dc, nominal.
Listing Deadlines: Switchgear and industrial control assemblies operating at 15,000 volts or less must be listed by January 1, 2029, while units over 15,000 up to 52,000 volts require listing by January 1, 2032.
SLIDE 3 (RECONDITIONED EQUIPMENT & WET LOCATIONS)
Reconditioned Rules and Weatherproofing:
Switchgear Permitted: The installation of reconditioned switchgear or sections of switchgear is permitted, provided fire- or water-damaged units are specifically evaluated by the manufacturer or a testing lab.
Other Equipment Prohibited: Reconditioned equipment other than switchgear sections is strictly prohibited from being installed.
Wet Locations: Enclosures in damp locations must be weatherproof, using wet-location listed fittings where raceways enter above uninsulated live parts.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP)
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Remember that while reconditioned switchgear sections can be installed after a formal manufacturer evaluation, reconditioned high-voltage components outside of switchgear assemblies are banned!
