SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER)
⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Disconnects & Recessed Fixtures (Part 3) ⚡
Fluorescent/LED service disconnects, Type IC recessed clearances, and Class P ballast protection—let's review Sections 410.68 through 410.136! 👇
SLIDE 2 (DISCONNECTING MEANS)
Safe Servicing for Double-Ended Lamps:
Mandatory Disconnects: In indoor non-dwelling spaces, fluorescent or LED luminaires utilizing double-ended lamps with serviceable ballasts/drivers require an internal or external disconnecting means.
Simultaneous Break: When connected to multiwire branch circuits, the disconnect must simultaneously break all supply conductors, including the neutral.
SLIDE 3 (RECESSED FIXTURES & BALLASTS)
Managing Heat and Insulation:
Recessed Incandescent/HID: Recessed fixtures must feature thermal protection (thermally or inherently protected) to prevent overheating.
Insulation Clearance: Thermal insulation must stay at least 75 mm (3 in.) away from recessed luminaire enclosures unless the fixture is rated Type IC.
Indoor Ballasts: Indoor fluorescent ballasts must feature integral thermal protection (Class P).
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
Don't pack thermal insulation directly on top of non-IC-rated recessed can lights—always maintain the mandatory 3-inch clearance to prevent tripping thermal protectors or starting fires!
