⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Class II Seals & Motors (Part 3) ⚡
When are conduit seals required in dusty locations? How do you pipe ventilation for motors in grain mills? Let's dive into Sections 502.15 and 502.125! 👇
Stopping Dust Migration:
The Sealing Rule: A seal is required if a raceway provides communication between a dust-ignitionproof enclosure and one that is not dust-ignitionproof.
Alternative Methods: Permitted means include a permanent seal, a horizontal raceway at least 10 feet long, a vertical raceway extending downward at least 5 feet, or electrical sealing putty. Unlike Class I, Class II seals do not need to be explosionproof.
Controlling Heat & Airflow:
Division 1 Motors: Motors must be identified for the location or totally enclosed pipe-ventilated.
Ventilating Pipes: Pipes supplying clean air must be metal (at least 0.021 inches thick) or noncombustible, dusttight throughout their length in Division 1, and lead directly to clean outside air.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: If a raceway runs from a dust-ignitionproof enclosure directly to an unclassified location, a conduit seal is not required because dust cannot travel inward from the non-hazardous side!
