Article 382 (Part 1 of 2)
Nonmetallic Extensions — Flat Wire Technology!
SLIDE 1 — Scope, Listing & Load-Side Protection (382.1, 382.2, 382.4)
🏗️ WHAT IS A NONMETALLIC EXTENSION?
Covers use, installation, and construction specs for nonmetallic extensions — including the newer "concealable" flat-conductor type.
✅ Concealable nonmetallic extensions AND their fittings/devices must be LISTED (382.2).
🛡️ LOAD-SIDE PROTECTION (382.4)
The starting/source tap device must provide ALL of the following for every load-side extension/device:
1️⃣ Supplementary OCPD
2️⃣ Class A GFCI-equivalent protection
3️⃣ Portable GFCI-equivalent protection
4️⃣ Line/load miswire protection
5️⃣ Arc-fault protection
SLIDE 2 — Uses Permitted (382.10)
✅ WHERE YOU CAN USE THEM
🔹 From an EXISTING outlet on a 15A or 20A branch circuit — if tapped from a non-grounding receptacle, must comply with 250.130(C) or 406.12(D)(2)(b)/(c)
🔹 Run exposed (or concealed per 382.15), and in a DRY location
🔹 Surface-mounted on walls/ceilings → building must be residential or office use, ≤3 floors above grade. Concealable extensions CAN go above 3 floors if identified for the use.
SLIDE 3 — Uses Not Permitted & Exposed Installation (382.12, 382.15)
⛔ WHERE YOU CAN'T USE THEM
1️⃣ Unfinished basements, attics, or roof spaces
2️⃣ Voltage between conductors over 150V (surface) or 300V (aerial cable)
3️⃣ Subject to corrosive vapors
4️⃣ Run through a floor/partition, or outside the room it originates in
📏 EXPOSED RUNS (382.15)
🔹 Can run in any direction from an existing outlet — but NOT on the floor or within 50mm (2 in.) of it
🔹 Concealable types (if identified) CAN be hidden under paint, texture, plaster, wallpaper, tile, paneling, etc.
SLIDE 4 — Bends & Support + Final Exam (382.24, 382.30)
🔄 BENDS (382.24)
🔹 A bend reducing conductor spacing must be covered with a protective cap
🔹 Concealable extensions CAN be folded back on themselves and flattened as needed
📏 SECURING (382.30)
🔹 Surface extensions: secured every < 200 mm (8 in.), with up to 300mm (12 in.) allowed to the first fastening (attachment-plug connections). At least ONE fastening between adjacent outlets. Attach ONLY to woodwork/plaster — never touching metal (except receptacle metal plates).
🔹 Concealable types: firmly anchored with an adhesive or mechanical system identified for the use.
🧠 FINAL EXAM QUESTION FOR ARTICLE 382 (Part 1)
Q: Per 382.10(A), a nonmetallic extension must originate from an existing outlet on a branch circuit rated at what amperage?
A) 15 or 20 amps
B) 20 or 30 amps
C) 15 amps only
D) Any rating up to 50 amps
