SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Industrial X-Ray Equipment (Part 1 - Scope & Connections) ⚡
From inspecting thick metal welds to airport baggage fluoroscopy, industrial X-ray units operate at extreme voltages! Welcome to Article 660. Let's break down the scope, supply connections, and reconditioned gear rules! 👇
Industrial Inspection & Radiography:
Targeted Scope: Covers all nonmedical and nondental X-ray equipment operating at any frequency or voltage for industrial testing, radiography, and fluoroscopy. (Note: Healthcare X-ray equipment falls under Article 517).
Reconditioned Gear Permitted: Unlike low-voltage surge protection or primary protectors, the installation of reconditioned industrial X-ray equipment is permitted (Section 660.3).
Cord & Plug vs. Hard-Wired Connections:
Fixed Equipment: Connected via standard Chapter 3 wiring methods. Equipment supplied by branch circuits rated 30 amperes or less is permitted to use a plug cap and hard-service cord.
Portable/Mobile Units: Supplied through suitable hard-service cables. Individual branch circuits are not required for portable/mobile X-ray gear requiring 60 amperes or less.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Industrial X-ray systems radiate extremely high-voltage internal charges to inspect materials. Unless specifically identified and listed for the location, X-ray equipment is strictly prohibited from being installed in Hazardous (Classified) locations!
