SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Limited-Energy Pathways (Part 1 - Article 723 & Raceways) ⚡
Where do the pathway rules live for low-voltage systems? Meet Article 723! Created to give raceways, cable routing assemblies, and nonmetallic cable trays for limited-energy systems their own unified home. Let's break down the raceway rules! 👇
SLIDE 2 (SCOPE & LISTING MANDATES) What Does Article 723 Cover?
Pathway Consolidation: Governs raceways, cable routing assemblies, and cable trays installed specifically for limited-energy wiring.
Fire & Wet Listing: Pathways must be listed as resistant to the spread of fire. If installed in wet locations, they must be listed for wet locations.
SLIDE 3 (COMMUNICATIONS RACEWAYS & INNERDUCT) Types of Approved Raceways:
Chapter 3 Raceways: Limited-energy wires can use any standard Chapter 3 raceway (following Article 722 separation rules).
Flexible Nonmetallic Raceways: Plenum, Riser, and General-Purpose communications raceways follow rules similar to ENT (Electrical Nonmetallic Tubing).
Innerduct: Listed communications raceways are explicitly permitted to be pulled as innerduct inside Chapter 3 metallic or nonmetallic raceways!
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
Just like cables, communications raceways have a strict substitution hierarchy (Table 723.22(B)). You can substitute a Plenum raceway into a Riser or General-Purpose application, but you can never put a General-Purpose raceway into an air-handling plenum!
