SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Fire Pump Transformers & 2-Hour Protection (Part 4) ⚡
How do you size dedicated fire pump transformers? What wiring methods provide the required 2-hour fire resistance for feeder cables? Let's finish Article 695! 👇
Stepping Down Voltage Safely:
Transformer Sizing: Must be rated at a minimum of 125 percent of the sum of fire pump and jockey pump motor loads (plus 100 percent of accessory loads).
Primary vs. Secondary OCPD: Primary OCPDs must carry locked-rotor current indefinitely, and secondary overcurrent protection is strictly prohibited on dedicated fire pump transformers!
Protecting Feeders from External Fire:
Physical Routing: Supply conductors must be routed outside buildings where possible.
2-Hour Fire Protection: Where routed inside a building, fire pump supply conductors must be protected against failure from fire by a 2-hour fire-resistive cable system, a 2-hour rated enclosure, or encasement in 2 inches of concrete.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Running standard EMT through a burning commercial building will melt your fire pump feeders in minutes. Always verify whether your AHJ requires 2-hour fire-rated MI cable, circuit survivability wraps, or concrete encasement!
