Article 820 (1 of 1, So Far!)
Community Antenna Television and Radio Distribution Systems — Scope, Alternate Methods & Power Limits!
SLIDE 1 — Scope (820.1)
📺 WHAT DOES ARTICLE 820 COVER?
Coaxial cable distribution of radio frequency (RF) signals, typically used in CATV systems.
🔹 Closed-circuit TV
🔹 Cable television
🔹 Security TV cameras
🔹 Coaxial cable for radio and TV receiving equipment
📌 Network-powered broadband installations are covered in Article 830, not here.
SLIDE 2 — Alternate Wiring Methods (820.4)
🔀 NETWORK-POWERED BROADBAND SUBSTITUTION
Network-powered broadband wiring methods are PERMITTED to substitute for the wiring methods of Article 820.
💡 Why it matters: using network-powered broadband methods makes it easier to upgrade an existing Article 820 installation to network-powered broadband applications later.
SLIDE 3 — Power Limitations (820.15)
⚡ POWER OVER COAX
Coaxial cable can deliver power to equipment directly associated with the RF distribution system IF:
🔹 Voltage is NOT over 60 volts
🔹 Current comes from a transformer or other device with power-limiting characteristics
🚫 Power must be BLOCKED from premises devices on the network that are not intended to be powered via the coaxial cable.
SLIDE 4 — Final Exam
🧠 FINAL EXAM QUESTION FOR ARTICLE 820 (Part 1)
Q: Per 820.15, coaxial cable can deliver power to associated equipment if the voltage is not over what?
A) 24 volts
B) 48 volts
C) 60 volts
D) 120 volts
