SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: High-Voltage Guarding & Oil-Resistant Cables (Part 4) ⚡
Why are step-up X-ray transformers exempt from standard Article 450 vault rules? How are high-voltage leads guarded? Let's finish up Article 660! 👇
Built Into the Equipment:
Exempt From Article 450 & 460: Step-up transformers and capacitors that are integral parts of X-ray equipment are not required to comply with Article 450 or 460.
Why? Fire hazards are minimized because low primary power feeds high-voltage step-up circuitry contained within sealed equipment bodies.
Shielding Extreme Voltages:
Grounded Enclosures: All high-voltage parts (including X-ray tubes) must be mounted inside grounded enclosures insulated by air, oil, or gas, using high-voltage shielded cables.
Oil-Resistant Insulation: Low-voltage cables connecting to unsealed oil-filled transformers or coolers must have oil-resistant insulation.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Under Section 660.48, battery-operated mobile X-ray units are completely exempt from standard premises grounding rules. For all stationary units, however, grounded metal enclosures around high-voltage tubes are absolute law!
