Boxes, Ampacity & Construction — Article 334 Complete!
SLIDE 1 — Boxes, Fittings & Devices Without Boxes (334.40)
📦 BOX REQUIREMENTS
Nonmetallic outlet boxes → permitted per 314.5.
💡 Self-contained switches/receptacles/cable interconnector devices made of insulating material, LISTED for use without a box, ARE permitted (exposed or concealed) — as long as:
✅ Openings form a close fit around the cable's outer covering
✅ The device fully encloses any part where covering has been removed
✅ Enough binding-screw terminals exist for every conductor
Wiring devices with integral enclosures identified for the use → permitted per 300.17(E).
SLIDE 2 — Ampacity Rules (334.80)
📊 THE 60°C RULE — CRITICAL FOR RESIDENTIAL WORK
Ampacity determined per 310.14, BUT — capped at the 60°C (140°F) rated conductor ampacity. The 90°C rating CAN be used for adjustment/correction calculations, as long as the FINAL calculated ampacity still doesn't exceed the 60°C value.
⚠️ Derating triggers (334.80(B)–(C)):
More than 2 NM/NMC cables (each with 2+ current-carrying conductors) bundled WITHOUT spacing — through the same opening sealed with insulation/caulk/foam, OR in contact with thermal insulation — requires ampacity adjustment per Table 310.15(C)(1). This is a classic install mistake: bundling cables in insulated attics/walls without accounting for derating.
SLIDE 3 — Construction Specs (334.100–334.112)
🏗️ WHAT'S INSIDE THE CABLE
🔹 Sheath (334.100): outer covering must be NONMETALLIC material
🔹 Conductors (334.104): 600V power conductors — 16-2 AWG copper, 14-2 AWG copper-clad aluminum, or 12-2 AWG aluminum. Control/signal conductors: min. 18 AWG copper / 16 AWG copper-clad aluminum
🔹 EGC (334.108): cable MUST include an insulated, covered, or bare equipment grounding conductor — in addition to the insulated power conductors
🔹 Insulation (334.112): conductor insulation rated at 90°C (194°F), from Table 310.4(1) or identified for this cable type
📌 Cables marked NM-B and NMC-B meet this 90°C insulation requirement — that's why virtually all Romex you buy today has the "-B" suffix.
SLIDE 4 — Sheath Requirements + Final Exam Question
🛡️ SHEATH SPECS (334.116)
Type NM: overall covering must be flame retardant AND moisture resistant
Type NMC: overall covering must be flame retardant, moisture resistant, FUNGUS resistant, AND corrosion resistant — the extra protections that let it survive wet/damp/corrosive environments.
🎉 That's a wrap on Article 334 — Nonmetallic-Sheathed Cable, Types NM and NMC!
🧠 FINAL EXAM QUESTION FOR ARTICLE 334
Q: Per 334.80(A), the ampacity of Type NM cable shall not exceed that of a conductor with what temperature rating, even though 90°C conductors may be used inside the cable?
A) 60°C (140°F)
B) 75°C (167°F)
C) 90°C (194°F)
