SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Industrial Control Panels (Part 1 - Article 409) ⚡
General-use control panels, 1000V/1500V limits, and 125% conductor ampacity rules—welcome to Article 409! How does the National Electrical Code regulate industrial control assemblies? Let's break down the scope! 👇
SLIDE 2 (SCOPE & SUPPLY CONDUCTORS)What Article 409 Covers:
The Control Panel Scope: Covers industrial control panels intended for general use and operating at not over 1000 volts ac, 1500 volts dc, nominal.
Minimum Conductor Size: Supply conductor ampacity must be not less than 125% of the full-load current rating of all heating loads plus 125% of the highest rated motor, plus the sum of all other connected motor and apparatus loads operating simultaneously.
SLIDE 3 (OVERCURRENT PROTECTION RULES)Protecting Incoming Supply Circuits:
OCPD Locations: Overcurrent protection must be provided for each incoming supply circuit either by an OCPD located ahead of the panel or via a single main OCPD located within the panel.
Maximum Rating: The supply OCPD rating cannot exceed the sum of the largest branch-circuit short-circuit/ground-fault protective device in the panel, plus 125% of heating loads, plus other continuous motor/apparatus loads.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
Always calculate control panel supply conductor ampacity using the 125% multiplier on heating loads and the largest motor—failing to account for combined motor and heater duties will result in overloaded feeders!
