⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Hazardous Location Protection Techniques (Part 3) ⚡
Explosionproof, dust-ignitionproof, intrinsic safety, and purging—how do we keep electrical gear from sparking a disaster? Let's break down Section 500.7 protection techniques! 👇
Containing Explosions & Excluding Dust:
Explosionproof equipment is permitted in Class I, Division 1 or 2 locations to safely contain an internal explosion without igniting the surrounding atmosphere.
Dust-ignitionproof equipment is permitted in Class II, Division 1 or 2 locations to prevent dust ingress and ignition.
Engineering Out Ignition Risks:
Purged and pressurized enclosures supply a protective gas at positive pressure to reduce flammable gas concentrations or exclude dust.
Intrinsic safety limits electrical and thermal energy in circuits to levels incapable of igniting flammable atmospheres under normal or abnormal conditions.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Gas detection systems can also be used as a permitted protection technique in restricted industrial establishments under strict monitoring, alarm, and automatic shutdown criteria!
