SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Enclosures & High-Voltage Interlocks (Part 3 - Article 665) ⚡
How does the NEC guard workers from hazardous internal voltages ranging from 150V to over 1000V inside industrial heaters? Let's break down Part II of Article 665! 👇
SLIDE 2 (NONCOMBUSTIBLE ENCLOSURES & DEAD-FRONT PANELS) Guarding Internal Components:
Noncombustible Housing: The converting device must be completely contained within noncombustible enclosures.
Dead-Front Construction: All control panels must be of dead-front construction to prevent accidental finger contact with live control terminals.
SLIDE 3 (ACCESS DOOR INTERLOCKS & LOCKOUTS) Tiered Voltage Safeguards:
150V to 1000V: Access doors to compartments with 150V–1000V must be capable of being locked closed or interlocked to prevent energizing while open.
Exceeding 1000V: Access doors to high-voltage compartments (>1000V) require a disconnect equipped with mechanical lockouts to prevent access while energized!
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
Never bypass an access door interlock on a high-frequency converter during troubleshooting without following strict lockout/tagout procedures. Stray RF and high dc bus voltages inside these enclosures are lethal!
