SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER)
⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Temporary Splices & Supports (Part 3) ⚡
Construction site splice exceptions, lamp guards, and tree support rules—let's review Sections 590.6(D) through (I)! 👇
SLIDE 2 (LAMP GUARDS & CONSTRUCTION SPLICES)
Guards and Box Rules:
Lamp Protection: All lamps for general illumination must be protected from accidental contact or breakage by a guard (metal guards must be grounded).
Splice Enclosures: Splices normally require a box with a cover, but construction sites permit splicing multiconductor cords without a box provided equipment grounding continuity is maintained.
Disconnecting Means: Suitable switches or plug connectors must disconnect all ungrounded conductors simultaneously, using identified handle ties for multiwire branch circuits.
SLIDE 3 (SUPPORT & PROTECTION FROM DAMAGE)
Hanging and Routing Rules:
Elevated Cords: Cable assemblies and flexible cords serving as branch circuits or feeders shall not be installed on the floor or ground (extension cords are exempt from this support rule).
No Vegetation Support: Vegetation must not be used to support overhead spans of branch circuits or feeders.
Holiday Exception: Trees may support holiday lighting for up to 90 days if proper strain relief and tension take-up devices protect conductors from tree sway.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP)
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: While extension cords can cross floors if protected from physical damage, temporary branch circuits and feeder cables must be elevated and securely supported off the ground!
