Article 393 (Part 1 of 2)
Low-Voltage Suspended Ceiling Power Distribution Systems!
SLIDE 1 — Scope & Listing (393.1, 393.2)
🏗️ WHAT IS THIS SYSTEM?
A suspended ceiling assembly with a distribution BUS built into the ceiling grid structure — distributes Class 2 power for lighting and other low-voltage applications.
✅ LISTING (393.2)
🔹 (A) Systems operating at ≤30V ac or ≤60V dc must be LISTED as a complete system — utilization equipment, power supply, and fittings all part of the same identified system
🔹 (B) OR assembled from listed parts: listed low-voltage utilization equipment, listed Class 2 power supply, listed/identified fittings (connectors, grid rails with bare conductors), and listed low-voltage cables/conductors in raceways per Article 722
SLIDE 2 — Uses Permitted (393.10)
✅ WHERE YOU CAN USE THEM
1️⃣ Listed utilization equipment ≤30V ac (42.4V peak) or ≤60V dc — Class 2 power levels per Chapter 9 Table 11(A)/(B) — for lighting, control, signaling
2️⃣ Indoor dry locations
3️⃣ Residential, commercial, AND industrial installations
4️⃣ Air-handling spaces (per 300.25(C)) — metal enclosures OR nonmetallic enclosures/fittings listed for air-handling use, with fire-resistant, low-smoke characteristics and ambient-temp-suitable wiring
SLIDE 3 — Uses Not Permitted (393.12)
⛔ WHERE YOU CAN'T USE THEM
1️⃣ Damp locations
2️⃣ Corrosive fumes/vapors (e.g., storage battery rooms)
3️⃣ Subject to physical damage
4️⃣ Concealed locations
5️⃣ Hazardous (classified) locations
6️⃣ Part of a fire-rated floor-ceiling or roof-ceiling assembly — unless specifically listed for that assembly
7️⃣ Lighting in general or critical patient care areas
SLIDE 4 — Installation Requirements & Disconnecting Means (393.14, 393.21) + Final Exam
🔧 GENERAL INSTALLATION (393.14(A))
Must be installed by QUALIFIED PERSONS. Exposed cables/conductors on ceilings/sidewalls must be supported by the building structure using straps, staples, hangers, or listed cable ties — so normal building use doesn't damage them.
🔌 INSULATED CONDUCTORS (393.14(B))
Exposed secondary conductors must be listed Class 2 cable (per Article 722 Part I & 725 Parts I–II) OR a Chapter 3 wiring method.
🔀 DISCONNECTING MEANS (393.21)
🔹 Must be accessible AND within sight of the Class 2 power source
🔹 On a multiwire branch circuit → must disconnect ALL supply conductors simultaneously, including grounded conductors
🧠 FINAL EXAM QUESTION FOR ARTICLE 393 (Part 1)
Q: Per 393.10(1), listed utilization equipment for this system is limited to a maximum of 30 volts ac or what dc voltage?
A) 24 volts dc
B) 48 volts dc
C) 60 volts dc
D) 120 volts dc
