Article 393 (Part 2 of 2)
Low-Voltage Suspended Ceiling Power Distribution Systems — Support, Connectors, Overcurrent Protection, Grounding & Conductor Sizing!
SLIDE 1 — Securing & Supporting (393.30)
📏 ATTACHED TO BUILDING STRUCTURE (393.30(A))
Secured to the mounting surface via hanging wires, screws, or bolts per the installation/operation instructions. Mounting hardware must either be packaged with the system or specified in the instructions.
🔗 POWER GRID RAILS (393.30(B))
Individual power grid rails must be mechanically secured to the overall ceiling grid assembly.
SLIDE 2 — Connectors & Enclosures (393.40)
🔌 CONNECTOR TYPES (393.40(A))
Connections to busbar grid rails/cables/conductors must use LISTED insulating devices and stay accessible after installation. Soldered connections must be mechanically secure BEFORE soldering.
🔹 Load connector → busbar to listed utilization equipment
🔹 Pendant connector → suspends luminaires/equipment below the grid rail, supplies power
🔹 Power feed connector → connects the power supply to a distribution cable and the busbar
🔹 Rail-to-rail connector → interconnects busbars between grid rails
📦 ENCLOSURES (393.40(B))
Connections made in a wall must be installed in an enclosure per Article 314 Parts I–III.
SLIDE 3 — Overcurrent Protection, Splices & Connections (393.45, 393.56, 393.57)
⚡ OVERCURRENT & BACKFEED PROTECTION (393.45)
🔹 Listed Class 2 power supply/transformer primary protected at ≤20A
🔹 Listed Class 2 sources can't have paralleled/interconnected outputs unless listed for it
🔹 DC reverse polarity (backfeed) protection: either built into the power supply, OR provided via the grid rail busbar/power feed connector
🔗 SPLICES (393.56)
Busbar splices need insulation and mechanical protection equivalent to the grid rail busbars themselves.
🔌 CONNECTIONS (393.57)
Made with listed insulating devices, accessible after installation — in-wall connections need an enclosure per Article 314 Parts I–III.
SLIDE 4 — Grounding & Conductor Sizing + Final Exam (393.60, 393.61, 393.100)
🌎 GROUNDING
🔹 Supply side of the Class 2 power source → must connect to an EGC per Article 250 Part IV (393.60)
🔹 Load-side Class 2 circuits → PERMITTED to be grounded (393.61)
📏 CONDUCTOR SIZING (393.100)
🔹 Load-side utilization conductors → copper, 18 AWG minimum (down to 24 AWG allowed for Class 2 circuits if enclosed, unstrained, and Table 522.22 ampacity-compliant)
🔹 Power feed bus rail → 16 AWG minimum or equivalent (circular busbar: ≥1.29mm/0.051 in. diameter; non-circular: ≥1.32mm²/0.002 in.² area)
🧠 FINAL EXAM QUESTION FOR ARTICLE 393 (Part 2)
Q: Per 393.45(A), the listed Class 2 power supply or transformer primary shall be protected at not greater than what amperage?
A) 15 amps
B) 20 amps
C) 30 amps
D) 40 amps
