SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER)
⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Impedance & Induction Heating (Part 3) ⚡
Isolation transformers, 30-volt secondary limits, industrial exceptions, and induction coil safeguards—let's review Sections 427.25 through 427.37! 👇
SLIDE 2 (IMPEDANCE HEATING SYSTEMS)
Low-Voltage Pipeline Heating:
Personnel Protection: All accessible external surfaces of heated pipelines/vessels must be guarded, isolated, or insulated with a weatherproof jacket.
Isolation Transformer: Requires a dual-winding transformer with a grounded shield between primary and secondary windings.
Voltage Caps: Secondary output voltage shall not exceed 30 volts ac (though industrial establishments meeting strict supervision and ground-fault protection rules are permitted up to 80V or 132V ac to ground).
SLIDE 3 (INDUCTION HEATING SYSTEMS)
Controlling Induced Currents:
Coil Enclosures: Induction coils operating above 30 volts ac must be enclosed in nonmetallic or split metallic enclosures, isolated, or made inaccessible.
Stray Currents: Induction coils must be shielded or isolated to prevent induced circulating currents in surrounding metallic structures, and stray paths must be bonded to prevent arcing.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
When installing impedance heating systems on large industrial pipelines, verify that your dual-winding isolation transformers feature grounded shields and comply with the strict secondary voltage limits!
