⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Commercial Garages Overview (Part 1 - Article 511) ⚡
Service bays, major overhauls, and motor fuel dispensing—welcome to Article 511! How do you classify commercial repair and storage garages under the National Electrical Code? Let's break down the fundamentals! 👇
What Article 511 Covers:
The Scope: Applies to occupancies used for service and repair operations on self-propelled vehicles (cars, trucks, buses, tractors) using volatile flammable liquids or flammable gases for fuel.
Parking Garages: Parking garages used solely for parking or storage are permitted to be unclassified.
Marine Craft: Repair facilities for boats and marine craft must also comply with the requirements of Article 511.
Major vs. Minor Operations:
Fuel Dispensing: Major and minor repair garages that dispense motor fuels (like gasoline, natural gas, hydrogen, or LPG) must have dispensing functions classified in accordance with Article 514.
Non-Fuel Class I Liquids: Where Class I liquids other than fuels are dispensed, the area within 900 mm (3 ft) of any fill or dispensing point extending in all directions is a Class I, Division 2 location.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: The term Class I liquids refers to flammable liquids with a flash point below 100°F (38°C) like gasoline, whereas diesel fuel has a flash point above 100°F and is classified as a Class II combustible liquid!
