⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Permitted & Prohibited Fixture Uses (Part 3) ⚡
Luminaire tap rules, enclosed protection requirements, and branch-circuit bans—let's review Sections 402.10 through 402.12! 👇
SLIDE 2 (USES PERMITTED - 402.10)
Where Fixture Wires Are Allowed:
Enclosed Spaces: Permitted for installation in luminaires and similar equipment where enclosed or protected and not subject to bending or twisting in use.
Branch-Circuit Taps: Permitted for connecting luminaires to the branch-circuit conductors supplying them (transitioning via junction boxes or wiring compartments).
SLIDE 3 (USES NOT PERMITTED - 402.12)
Strict Code Restrictions:
No Branch-Circuit Substitute: Fixture wires shall not be used as general branch-circuit conductors.
Exposed Runs: Prohibited from being run openly across building surfaces or installed in locations subject to physical abuse or excessive mechanical stress.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
You can use fixture wire as a tap conductor from a junction box to a luminaire, but you can never use it to run a general power circuit across a building!
