Slide 1 — Hook "New chapter! Chapter 3 is where the NEC gets physical — every wire, cable, conduit, and box type lives here. 47 articles. Let's map it out before we dive in." Text overlay: NEC CHAPTER 3 — WIRING METHODS & MATERIALS 🔧 Overview
Slide 2 — How Chapter 3 is structured
Article 300 is the FOUNDATION — general requirements that apply to almost every wiring method in the rest of the chapter (support, protection, splices, boxes, underground rules, fire-rated penetrations, etc.). Article 305 is its medium-voltage twin (over 1000V AC/1500V DC), same relationship as Article 300 has to everything else.
Article 310 covers CONDUCTORS themselves — the wire inside the wiring method. Articles 312 and 314 cover the boxes/cabinets/enclosures that conductors terminate or splice in. Article 315 is medium-voltage cable/terminations.
Then comes the big one: a long run of CABLE TYPE articles (320 AC, 322 FC, 324 FCC, 326 IGS, 330 MC, 332 MI, 334 NM/NMC, 335 ITC, 336 TC, 337 Type P, 338 SE/USE, 340 UF) — each article is essentially "here's this cable type, here's where you can and can't use it."
Followed by a long run of CONDUIT/TUBING/RACEWAY articles (342 IMC, 344 RMC, 348 FMC, 350 LFMC, 352 PVC, 353 HDPE, 354 NUCC, 355 RTRC, 356 LFNC, 358 EMT, 360 FMT, 362 ENT) — same idea, one article per conduit/tubing type.
Then specialty raceways and support systems: gutters, busways, cablebus, flexible bus, floor raceways, wireways, multioutlet assemblies, strut channel, surface raceways, underfloor raceways, cable trays, suspended ceiling power systems — plus two legacy/special methods (knob-and-tube, messenger-supported wiring, open wiring on insulators) that close out the chapter.
Slide 3 — Why this matters for how we'll cover it
Article 300 is dense enough to deserve its own full episode arc — we're starting there because its rules get referenced constantly by every cable/conduit article that follows (you've already seen this pattern: Article 267/268 kept pointing back to each other; the wiring method articles will constantly point back to 300).
After 300 (and likely 305), we'll move article-by-article down the cable types, then the conduit/tubing types, then the specialty raceway articles, then close with the legacy wiring methods — following the chapter's own order.
Slide 4 — Quiz + CTA Q: "Which article contains the GENERAL requirements that apply across most of Chapter 3's wiring methods (support, protection, splicing, underground installation, etc.)?" A) Article 310 B) Article 300 C) Article 392 D) Article 358
✅ Answer: B — Article 300 is the chapter's foundational article.
