⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Midway Wiring & Disconnects (Part 3) ⚡
What cord types are permitted on amusement rides? Where must emergency ride disconnects be located? Let's review Sections 525.20 through 525.23! 👇
Extra-Hard Usage Rules:
Cord Requirements: Flexible cords and cables must be listed for extra-hard usage. Hard-usage cords are permitted only if not subject to physical damage. Outdoors, cords must also be wet-location and sunlight-resistant.
Single Conductors & Splices: Single-conductor cables are permitted only in sizes 2 AWG or larger. Flexible cords must be continuous without splices or taps between boxes or fittings.
Public Access: Cord connectors cannot be laid on the ground unless listed for wet locations, and cable connections must be guarded in public traffic paths.
Operator Control & Weatherproofing:
Moving Rides: Each portable ride must have a disconnect located within sight of and within 1.8 m (6 ft) of the operator's station, readily accessible during operation, and lockable if accessible to the public.
Distribution Boxes: Portable distribution boxes installed outdoors must be weatherproof and mounted so the bottom of the enclosure is at least 150 mm (6 in.) above the ground to prevent moisture entry.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Mounting distribution boxes at least 6 inches off the ground also ensures proper cable bending radii as conductors enter from below!
