Slide 1 — Hook "Today: fitting power monitoring gear into a panelboard enclosure, extra wiring space requirements, and a detail everyone forgets — screws that poke too far into the box."
Slide 2 — 312.11(B) Power monitoring/energy management equipment
This gear CAN share a switch/OCPD enclosure's wiring space, if: it's identified as a field-installable accessory of the listed equipment, OR a listed kit specifically evaluated for that installation.
Total area of all conductors/splices/taps/equipment at any cross-section stays under 75%.
Control/instrumentation conductors follow either 724.49, OR — for smaller conductors (down to 22 AWG single / 26 AWG multiconductor) — a specific set of conditions: enclosed in raceway or routed/secured along enclosure walls at intervals ≤10", secured within 10" of terminations, secured to avoid contact with current-carrying parts, rated for system voltage (600V minimum), and insulated for at least 90°C.
Slide 3 — 312.12 & 312.13
312.12: cabinets/cutout boxes need back-wiring spaces, gutters, or wiring compartments as required by 312.101(C)/(D) — pointing ahead to the Part II construction specs.
312.13: field-installed screws/fasteners entering wiring spaces must follow manufacturer specs, OR: be machine-type with blunt ends (screws) or blunt ends (other fasteners), and extend into the enclosure no more than ¼" unless the end is protected — EXCEPT fasteners within 3/8" of an enclosure wall can extend up to 7/16" instead.
Slide 4 — Quiz + CTA Q: "A field-installed screw entering a cabinet's wiring space, without manufacturer-specific guidance, must generally extend into the enclosure no more than what distance?" A) 1/8 in. B) 1/4 in. C) 1/2 in. D) 1 in.
✅ Answer: B — 312.13(3): generally capped at ¼" (6 mm), with a narrower exception allowing 7/16" if the fastener is close to a wall.
